McCain “Wins” Saddleback Church “Appearance”

Filed under: Elections, Executive Suite — admin @ 12:48 pm

You all know how I took yesterday’s double billing at the Saddleback Church (clue: it was above Obama’s pay grade) but what do others think about it? Here’s what John E. Carey, from Peace and Freedom, had to say about it.

So I jump to conclusions and I do believe that John McCain won the day at Pastor Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church in California last night.

But who am I?  Why believe me?

I give you David Gergen, who said on CNN after last night’s event, “Obama was thoughtful but didn’t move the emotional needle very much.”

Read: Obama was professorial; a professor.

David Gergen should know.  He’s currently a professor of public service at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and director of its Center for Public Leadership. He is also editor-at-large for U.S. News & World Report and a Senior Political Analyst for CNN. In earlier years, he served as a White House advisor to Presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Clinton.

McCain is decisive and sure.  People thought, “maybe McCain will fail the test of the Evangelicals?”

How many of those American Evangelicals have more time in a communist prison than John McCain (and my own wife and many of her friends)?  How many have a greater abiding faith in their Maker?

What I saw last night said to me, McCain is a real man of strongly held beliefs.  Mr. Obama is a professor turned politician:  a product of two lines of work I have little respect for any more.  Obama waffled, posed, ran around the topics.

McCain hit the nail into the board.

Now we have all seen why Mr. Obama ran away from the opportunity to participate in “Town Hall” meetings along side Mr. McCain.  Obama can’t hold McCain’s horse so he’d better get good at the shovel.  Actually, some would say he’s pretty good at shoveling it right now.

Mr. Gergen said of the candidates, “What they must have are: inner mastery; a central, compelling purpose rooted in moral values; a capacity to persuade; skills in working within the system; a fast start; a strong, effective team; and a passion that inspires others to keep the flame alive.”

Pretty clear to me who “won.”  And I know I am supposed to concentrate more upon loving the event as it unfolds….

Obama says pointed abortion query “above his pay grade”

Filed under: Culture, Elections, Executive Suite — admin @ 10:46 pm

Obama and McCain, both going after the evangelical vote, answered some questions from noted evangelical pastor Rick Warren. Why did they do this?

Both candidates were vying for the “faith vote,” in particular the one in four U.S. adults who count themselves as evangelical.

Thanks for answering my question highlighting tool. I wonder how McCain answered a question about when a person becomes a person?

He [McCain] said a baby’s human rights began “at the moment of conception … I have a 25-year pro-life record.”

Wow! Thanks for that answer again highlight tool. Now, I bet you that Obama gave a better answer than McCain did. I mean, come on! Obama is fresh and young and is all about change and all that jazz. Plus, unlike all those moronic republicans, he can talk. Oh how he talks! So, how did he answer this simple question Mr. highlight tool?

“… whether you’re looking at it from a theological perspective or a scientific perspective, answering that question  with specificity … is above my pay grade.”

[Crickets chirping]

That has to be a misprint. Right? Highlight tool - are you there?

Wow, I guess Senator Obama has no opinion about such a fundamental question as to when a person becomes a person. Doesn’t that strike you as odd?

McCain/Lieberman ‘08?

Filed under: Elections, Executive Suite — admin @ 2:51 pm

Not if I have anything to say about it.

Joe Lieberman, the former Democratic vice-presidential nominee who has endorsed John McCain, is being vetted as a potential running mate for the Republican presidential hopeful, according to an adviser to Mr McCain’s campaign.

Mr Lieberman, who has campaigned for the Arizona senator, has long been considered an unconventional but plausible choice for Mr McCain.

Although Democrats have rejected Mr McCain’s image as a maverick politician, Mr Lieberman’s support for the presumptive Republican nominee has, much to the chagrin of his former colleagues, helped to boost Mr McCain’s reputation as a bi-partisan legislator with friends on both sides of the aisle. Mr Lieberman, a staunch supporter of Israel, could also help Mr McCain win over Jewish voters.

“[McCain] loves Lieberman. And he is on the [short-]list because Lieberman has never embarrassed anyone, never misspoken. The first rule is, don’t take someone who costs you votes,” said one McCain adviser.

This would have to be a historical choice though. In 2004 Lieberman was the democrat’s pick for VP and now he might be the republican’s pick for VP.

Personally, I do not put much faith into McCain governing like a conservative domestically. Sure, he’ll be great on international issues (Hell, he’s been to South Ossetia!) but on things like cutting the budget, liberalising the economy, and appointing strict-constructionist judges I’m not sure.

Even though the VP doesn’t have to have much importance on policy issues that doesn’t mean he won’t. And I don’t know if I could cast my vote on such a risky proposition.

In the end I’m sure Obama will force my hand and make me vote for McCain no matter who his VP pick is. But if it’s Lieberman, I don’t know.
